Can anyone with that magazine confirm that quote from PCFormat?
EDIT:
Its in Wikipedia too.
Quote:
It has been suggested in an article UK PC Format that Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall are a trilogy with Nightfall just the culmination of the Titans/Shiro story arc. The Prophecies and Factions stories are only loosly linked so it is speculated the Nightfall storyline will connect the actions of the protagonists from the previous episodes and that this outcast god may have been the one to cause the Lich Lord (Chapter 1 Antagonist) and Shiro (Chapter 2 Antagonist) to suddenly become evil and powerful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars_Nightfall

Wouldn't surprise me. The engine is starting to get old. But if they do make a whole new guild wars game with a new engine, it'd be awsome if we could import what we've already done with our current guild wars characters into the next one.

like when you permanently transfer your D2 characters to Lord of Destruction expansion characters

Woah, guys, it's a big leap from saying "The end of a trilogy" and a whole new Guild Wars 2 (which, I assume, would re-launch the Core classes again).
I think it's a bit early for GW 2, and bet Chapter 4 will just be the start of a new storyline, with better graphics, naturally, but with the standard new missions, 2 new profs, new skills, etc.

To make a rumor, it has to be beleiveable and not too drastic. For instance, there will only be the 6 core classes in ch4.. there will be 6 new classes in ch4.
If you look at a peice of jade in 'the deep' you see homer simpson. ^^

You know Everquest lasted from 1999 to late 2004 (maybe even early 05. But Im not sure).
Anarchy Online is still going. They've started in 09 too I think.
Just because an engine is getting old doesnt mean the game is going anywhere. Even with this so called 'old engine', when you turn up all the graphics, the landscape in Guild Wars is by far prettier than a ton of other MMOs.
It's only been a year and a half. Guild Wars isnt going anywhere.

Ok guys, here's the run down on Vista.
Vista will contain BOTH DX9.0L and DX10. They are 2 different installs of DX on the system. They did this because DX10 is so drasticly different, this makes for less backwords compatibilty issues.
As for right now there are no games planned for DX10 that cannot run on DX9. So any game that supports DX10, will also support turning off those DX10 effects so they can run on DX9. This is at least for the time being. Eventually we will see games that are DX10 only.
For the case of GW if they add DX10 support it will still be completely backwords compatible just like it is now. Adding support is just that ADDING, not taking away.
So I don't think anyone should worry for right now. You will still be able to play upcomming games that are DX10 capable, for now.

Jeff Strain has said that the engine won't become outdated. One of the founders, Mike O'Brien coded the engine and he/his team can upgrade it as the need arises. In Nightfall, we are getting new screen effects, better water effects and HDR lighting.
This isn't exactly something where you are stuck using a version of a 3rd Party engine like Unreal Engine and rely on the makers to upgrade it.

True but that is not what people are calling you on.
Um...and microsoft says this, it disputes what you say.
You stated one fact and a few misconceptions. DX10 is a new Direct 3d engine, but it will include legacy in it. So if you still run XP, you can still play DX10 games.(just with out bells and the whistles) It would be suicide for a game company to alienate a majority of their client base, since not everyone upgrades right away.

Bro im sorry to say that I am right. Its all fact Windows XP cannot run DX10 research bro. Your wrong totally. I have no reason to lie or missinform people. Everything ive said in my posts are true. NO DX10 for windows XP!!! Im sorry but DX10 is a new make up. DX9 cannot run DX10. WINDOWS VISTA AERO EFFECTS are ran off of DX9. DX10 is an extension of DX9 YES...but it IS NOT DX9. PLZ understand. DX10 is VISTA ONLY!
Im so tired of people not understanding my posts. I never said GW cant be run in VISTA!!! READ MY POSTS!!! I said if they go DX10 they will need to make a DX9 version if they cant figure out how to dumb down the engine to revert to DX9 shaders!!! OMG plz listen and let it go already! I did explain myself properly, it just seems people want to be the first to state what i said and reword it!
Now im getting tired of this here is the proof from MICROSOFT themselves...

I have no reason to sit here and waste my time to missinform or lie! I have to keep up to date with this stuff or I woudlnt have a job...Trust me!
IF windows XP can run DX10 games they have to dumb down the engine to DX9 shaders..and so far Companies like Flagship say they have to product 2 versions of the game.
Not only this but most games being programed for windows Vista and dX10..are staying on DX10. Example? Halo2...its all marketing.

I think A.net would be killing themselves if they decided to release a guild wars game that didn't allow you to bring your old characters over. And I doubt they will make such a big jump in hardware requirement that most people will have to run out to build or buy new comps to play the latest game. If the hardware requirement goes up, I believe it would be a gradual change.

LoL. Rumors make me laugh.
Um, Chapter 3 comes out next month. Once it does, won't Chapter 4 already be 6 months into development??

I wouldn't mind a Guild Wars 2 running on a whole new engine...grafics are starting to stink.
A bit off topic, but I kinda expect Gates to not release Direct 10 for XP, since his whole career is based on leverage...ugh...

I re-read the OP again, and all it says is that "Chapter 3 will be the last of the series". I don't know where people jump to the conclusion that it will be the Last Guild Wars!
Facts:
Chapter 4 is in development.
Guild Wars is, by all accounts, making money.
Conjecture:
This could be the last of the Prophecy/Faction/Nightfall storyline. That's very possible, and would not effect Guild Wars the game at all. It would just mean Chapter 4 would start a totally new storyline, which in my mind, is not a bad thing.

Well, series can be confused with the actual ending of the franchise. Atleast the members at Gamespot thought so too.
But the PC Format magazine says that its the end of the Prophecy/Faction/Nightfall story arc too. All we need now is a confirmation from Gaile or Alex.
Which in this case, Guild Wars will get a new story arc in Chapter 4? New Races perhaps? Something more epic? Obviously this lets them try some new things story wise.

(8 expansions)
Everquest is still ongoing 1999 - present

(12th expansion is due in 2 weeks)
Anarchy Online started in 2001
all 3 games have outdated graphic engines and GW graphics are superior

In chapter 4 we will have a different game, but there wont be any official comment from Alex or Gaile till the very eve of the pre event.
Races with specific features (health, magic attunement, resistance and so on) would be really nice but it would imply a whole different playing scenario, and since the Guild Wars formula has been very successful i dont know if ANET would dare to venture far from there. Nevertheless evolution is the norm, and you cannot repeat the same trick over and over. ANET i wish you luck, i am with you!
But little by little, no need to rush and get a run to Chapter 4... time will tell

Well, their fault if they use DX instead of OpenGL.
All opengl games still run on todays hardware, really quick even, and old glsl shaders still run today. But of course, most game companies rather use the incompatible hacks called DX. Luckily, the ps3 might change this...

Quake 4 uses OpenGL and requires a decent computer to run at high graphic settings. I do like the fact that OpenGL still is around and hated the shift to DX but to be honest, an optimsed OpenGL looks awesome just as well as an optimsed DirectX.
